Is Your WooCommerce Store Ready for the New PHP Requirement?
WooCommerce is preparing to raise the minimum PHP version required to run future releases.
Under a proposal announced on 8 September 2026, WooCommerce 11.5 would require PHP 8.1 or newer when it arrives, provisionally in January 2027.
That may sound like a hosting detail. In practice, it could determine whether a store continues receiving important WooCommerce updates.
What is changing?
PHP is the software environment that runs WordPress and WooCommerce on the web server.
WooCommerce currently supports PHP 7.4 and newer. The proposed change would end support for PHP 7.4 and PHP 8.0 in new WooCommerce releases.
A website still using one of those versions would not suddenly stop operating. WordPress would normally prevent it from installing an incompatible WooCommerce release.
However, the store could then remain on an older WooCommerce branch while newer stores receive subsequent features, compatibility work and platform improvements.
WooCommerce currently expects the change to begin with version 11.5 in January 2027, although the final requirement and release timing have not yet been confirmed.
Why businesses should prepare now
Changing PHP is often straightforward on a well-maintained website. The risk comes from everything connected to WooCommerce.
An older theme, abandoned extension or custom integration may rely on code that does not work correctly on a newer PHP version.
Possible problems can include:
- Checkout or payment failures
- Broken administrative screens
- Errors in scheduled actions
- Missing customer emails
- Problems with stock or accounting integrations
- Subscription renewal failures
- Website instability under live traffic
These issues are far easier to handle on a staging copy than on a live store processing customer orders.
An immediate security concern
PHP 7.4 and PHP 8.0 have both reached the end of their standard upstream support.
WooCommerce says moving away from these versions will allow it and extension developers to use newer dependencies, remove legacy compatibility code and improve testing.
The forthcoming WooCommerce requirement is therefore not the only reason to review an old server. A business accepting customer details and payments should already know whether its underlying software remains properly supported.
Do not change the live server without testing
A hosting control panel may make changing PHP look like a one-click operation. That does not mean the website and all its extensions are compatible.
A sensible review should identify the current PHP, WordPress and WooCommerce versions, followed by the store’s active theme, extensions and custom code.
The upgrade should then be tested safely with the store’s important commercial journeys—including checkout, payment confirmation, fulfilment and scheduled processing.
The correct target version also needs consideration. PHP 8.1 is WooCommerce’s proposed minimum, but a minimum requirement is not necessarily the best long-term hosting choice.

Check before the deadline becomes urgent
January is not the ideal time for an online retailer to discover that an essential extension cannot run on a supported server environment.
