WooCommerce has released an important security update for websites using its official Stripe payment extension.
The issue affects a range of Stripe for WooCommerce versions released since 2025, including versions that previously received an earlier security update.
If your business accepts card payments through WooCommerce and Stripe, your website should be checked—even if automatic plugin updates are enabled.
What has happened?
WooCommerce announced the security update on 6 August 2026 after identifying several issues during internal security testing.
According to WooCommerce, the most significant issue could, under certain circumstances, cause an affected online store to become unavailable.
WooCommerce reported that it had found no evidence of the issue being actively exploited and no evidence that customer or payment information had been accessed. However, businesses should not delay checking their websites.
Once a vulnerability and its fix become publicly known, websites that have not been properly updated can become more attractive targets.

Could your WooCommerce store be affected?
Your website may require attention if it:
Uses WooCommerce to process online orders Accepts card payments through the official Stripe extension Has not been updated recently Relies entirely on automatic plugin updates Received the earlier Stripe security update released in July Uses subscriptions, saved payment methods or customised checkout features Has custom code or extensions connected to the payment process
The August release is separate from the Stripe payment-validation update issued in July. A website that received the earlier update may therefore still require an additional security patch.
Why clicking “Update” may not be enough
Updating a payment plugin without preparation can create new problems, particularly on websites with older themes, custom development or multiple checkout extensions.
The website may appear to be working normally while customers experience problems such as:
Card payments failing at checkout Apple Pay or Google Pay disappearing Orders remaining in the wrong status Successful Stripe payments not reaching WooCommerce Subscription renewals failing Confirmation emails not being sent Checkout errors appearing only on certain devices
For that reason, a payment security update should include more than pressing the update button.
A safe update normally requires a verified backup, a compatibility review and proper testing of the payment journey afterwards.
Automatic updates should still be verified
Some affected websites may have received an automatic security update. However, automatic updates do not always complete successfully.
Hosting restrictions, file permissions, disabled background processes, customised plugins and other technical issues can prevent or interrupt an update.
Even when an update has installed correctly, it does not confirm that Stripe payments, webhooks and order processing are still working as expected.
The installed version and payment process should therefore be checked manually.
WooCommerce itself has also received a security update
WooCommerce 11.0.1 was released on 10 August 2026 with a collection of security, performance and compatibility improvements.
These changes affect areas including checkout handling, customer sessions, permissions and Store API validation.
Installing a major WooCommerce update without checking the website’s theme and extensions can create compatibility problems. Store owners should have both WooCommerce and the Stripe extension reviewed together.
